Studio Final: Section

Again, these are as posted in Boston. Section A-A is a very simlified section showing the release of space and vertical light shafts created by pulling the floor plates away at the N (left) structural wall and how the floor plates either pierce the glazing at the S (right) or are pulled back from the glazing to allow the space to flow from floor to floor.
Section B-B shows the opening from floor to sky in the stair/light well. There is a similar condition in the elevator/light well.

1. Idea of thesis is a good one
• Basic Parti works against the idea of flow
• Only 1 path from “building” to “building” – only 1 choice contradicts flow idea.
• Are you dictating flow? Or making free flow?
• There is no flow IN the building. No horizontal flow, vertical flow, etc.
2. If we are talking about flow…
• The second floor should be connected to the ground floor
• The third floor should be connected to the ground floor
3. Architecture that symbolizes.
• You need to make it about desire lines.
• Maybe a few towers with connecting elements rather than 2 spaces with a small bridge
• Maybe it is an internal movement in a cube
4. Everything is contradicted
• Crate and Barrel
• Bank Building on Federal Street
5. Why a concrete building?
6. Floor area – you are losing floor area, first thing a retailer will do is come in and square off the floors
7. A cube
• Work with fin architecture on the interior to direct flow
• The walls within the building direct people and the flow of architecture similar to veins
• This will allow the moments to occur that you are looking for. Each direction may produce a certain view.
8. “You need to define it to yourself and understand them”
• look at Carpenter Center again
• Define, refine and test the ideas – you need to be willing to do this and you haven’t
• It works against you that you have your idea of how architecture should be designed
• You need to wipe the slate clean and build on your experience.
