Work while in Bean Town

Here is the site for our new Apple Store on Copely Square (The building on the corner would be replaced) This post is to provide a space for a commentary from my "Affinity Group" partner, Eddie Alvardo, on progress during the intensive.

Rick,

Here are some points of the discussion we had with Ted G. on 08-20-07 (individual critique) and 08-21-07 (group critique)

Individual Critique:

1. Duality to say that he is in Boston.

2. You are proposing or thinking about Brick and Glass to Simbolize or relate the Architecture to Boston and the region. Ted is concerned about the redness of brick, not that he dislikes it, but concerned of how its implemented without being traditional.

3. He suggested perhaps using climate as a metaphor or representing the region, snow to simbolize the City and its region.

4. Is there a way to use the product to build a pond. Perhaps incorporate the product as part of the building insulation, therefore everytime you remove the product, you will have to replace to reinsulate.

5. Your intial scheme proposes to sink part of the building from the street level. The scheme proposes a wide 2'-0" tall horizontal band along the south and west end of the structure. The remaining 1'-6" of fall over preventing band to be of clear glass to allow views of the area below.

Group critique:

1. The idea remains as proposing the structure being recessed.

2. Incorporate monitors or displays to be seen at the pedestrian sunken court.

3. The reflection of the displays on the glass to be an Urban element inviting the passerby to visually interact with the store and perhaps be persuaded to participate inside.

4. Ted propose for the facade to become active and inactive during operating hours. Perhaps a folding brise soleil that open and closes to reveal the interior package.

5. Your experience to learn about the building.

My personal opinion is that you have a good start and that perhaps while we are in town we look at how Bostonians experience their buildings and sidewalks. How do they occupy their spaces or places.

Final Review comments from Intensive week

• Which flow are you focused on?
o Only one entrance, you have all these ideas of flow, yet they don’t exist in the building.
• You need to extend beyond the idea of symmetry
o Site is about the corner.
• Circulation may be your starting point. How do the people move through the site, not the building.
• Boston flow isn’t viewed from across the street. It has a suburban feel to it
• Right now the building seems to be pretty closed up
• Why only 2 floors?
• Corner is denied in plan.
• Don’t build below ground, study circulation
o No angles or 90°

Thank you for keeping track of and posting the comments from the Saturday Crit. My partner - Eddie - was busy pinning up during my crit and was unable to take notes. You are a real lifesaver!
